Since 1992 the Mercury Phoenix Trust have been responsible for donating more than £8 million in the fight against AIDS making over 600 grants to charities worldwide. Applications for grants have come in from many countries around the world and collaboration has been realised with groups as far removed as the World Health Organisation to grass-root organisations run partly by voluntary workers in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Nepal, India and South America. The Trust is following the latest developments in drug therapies and adapting funding policy to the changing needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS, and current concentrating it’s efforts on education and awareness in the Developing World.

Vandaag (1 December) is het Wereld Aidsdag.

Wereld Aidsdag is een internationale dag ten behoeve van aids georganiseerd door de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie en gesteund door de Verenigde Naties.

De dag wordt sinds 1998 georganiseerd met elke keer een ander thema. Het heeft als doel om wereldwijd aandacht te vragen voor de aidsproblematiek en om op te roepen tot meer solidariteit met mensen met hiv en aids. Er vinden wereldwijd veel initiatieven, evenementen en akties plaats zoals Sensoa dat iedereen oproept om deze dag het rode lintje op te spelden, het symbool voor solidariteit met mensen met hiv.

Dit jaar is het thema Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise – Leadership.

Vorig jaar heeft Queen + Paul Rodgers een single uitgebracht ten bate van Nelson Mandela’s AIDS-fonds (46664). Dit nummer (Say It’s Not True) werd al gespeeld tijdens de tour in 2005/2006 en is in 2007 uitgebracht als digitale download, en later ook als cd-single.
